Custom Guitars at an Affordable Price

Got G.A.S. (gear acquisition syndrome) for a custom shop guitar but can't afford the price or wait the 2 years to build it?. We build custom guitars and fix guitars. If you've got an idea for an axe you want realized, drop us an email or call and we can discuss it and get started on it. Now is the time. We can build it completely or just the piece you want. Want a really lightweight Strat type body in a color no manufacturer offers? We can do it here. Want a Jazzmaster in Seafoam Green, but don't want to use Fender pickups or want a flatter radiused or wider neck instead of the stock sizes? We can do it. Just ask.

Where Gecko Guitars Comes From

I've been building guitars a la carte since 1994. I wanted "Lucille, " B.B. Kings Gibson 345, but couldn't afford one. So, with the help of some fine tools guys and and lot of reading, I built one - right down to the Variotone switching. It was a bit crude and heavy as all get out, but sounded very good. Here's a link to it. I started using the Gecko mark at that time. Then I wanted a Les Paul, but there was no way I could afford one. So I built one. Then I wanted a Les Paul DC, and on and on.

To view the guitars I have built for myself and family, please visit Wizards Juke Joint , to see what I've done and am doing just for myself. Browse through the Fender® and Gibson® clone sections and checkout the guitars with the word Gecko in the name. Those are the ones I've built for myself.

Bodies and Woods We have our necks and bodies built to your specs by the premier builders of necks and bodies, primarily USA Custom Guitars and Warmoth, with others upon request. We can provide a body in any shape and wood you desire. We have these built to original OEM spec or to your specs. Your choice of body woods is limited only by your imagination: alder, swamp ash, mahogany, maple, and exotics like Koa, on request.  One-piece bodies are hard to come by and cost significantly more than two and three piece bodies. We recommend premium grade woods and one or two piece bodies for those killer tops you've always wanted and two or three piece bodies for guitars that are going to be painted solid colors. It saves you money. I can also get exotic or custom woods from several vendors for an upcharge.

Necks and Headstocks We use necks made by USA Custom Guitars for most necks. If you need an angled headstock, we use Warmoth. We can get you a neck in just about any configuration you want: a one piece vintage with skunk stripe, vintage with no stripe, truss adjust at the headstock or neck end, rosewood fretboards, maple fretboards, exotic wood boards, stainless fretwire , custom neck radius, neck profile, you name it.  For an upcharge, we can provide Brazilian Rosewood fretboards for those special guitars.

If you have a headstock shape you designed and would like to use, drop it on me. Necks from some makers come with a generic or non trademarked shape that we can change or customize. Warmoth and Musikraft necks come with the Fender® peghead shape and are licensed by Fender® to do so.

Hardware and Electronic PartAs our primary OEM pickups, we feature some fantastic single coil pickups from the land of cheese and running bratwurst, Angeltone. We also feature humbuckers, P-90s and other pickups from Jason Lollar Guitars, Harmonic Design and Seymour Duncan, just to name a few. I can order from others or you can provide them. We use only premium hardware, such as Callaham Guitars and TonePros, from all over the U.S.,but we can get and use licensed Fender® or Gibson® parts as well. We also like to use premium pots and caps from RS GuitarWorks, Mojo Musical Supply and others . The cost is higher, often twice as high, for some brand name parts when compared to non branded parts. We can get pickups from any popular vendors or you can provide them.

Complete Guitars We can build you a guitar from the ground up: body, neck, custom or existing peghead shape, finishing and mounting hardware and wiring up. Drop me an email, tell me what you want.

Finishing We finish guitars in the traditional way, with nitrocellulose lacquer. We use traditional wood preparation and finishing methods. We can paint your guitar in colors Fender or Gibson used to make, but no longer has available or only rarely makes available. Final clear coats are hand rubbed McFadden nitrocellulose lacquer from Luthiers' Mercantile. Nitro lets a guitar breathe and age like the originals. Today's mass produced guitars will look as pristine and shiny in 10 years as they did the day you bought them because they're encased in very hard plastic. Nitrocellulose lacquer thins as it ages, poly is forever. Nitro will develop little hairline cracks or beauty marks if you will, as it ages. The only way poly will get cracks is if you smack it with a hammer or drop it on a hard surface.

Please don't ask. We won't cut a non Fender® licensed generic peghead shape to make it look like a Fender® or Gibson®. We relish our financial freedom.
We don't sell parts, including hardware or pickups We have an agreement with our suppliers to not do that. As long as we do it that way, it allows us to get quality parts cheaper and keep the cost down to you.
