Step1
For this step, I took some red mahogany liquid stain and stained the top and back to give me the same starting color for both the front, back and sides.

| The back and top now match and I can proceed to step 2, sealing the finish so I can then start grain filling it, which is necessary on open grained wood like mahogany and swamp ash.

Mahogany and swamp ash both have quite pronounced grain and wide pores. This requires extensive pore/grain filling and leveling to achieve the final smooth, deep finish. This and the next shots on the page show the wood with just a clear coat over the previous stain. |

The top is grain filled and sealed. I still have a few little spots on the side to fill before I shoot the first lacquer coats.
