Quilted maple is a very elegant wood. It's not cheap either. This piece
has a sort of chevron, upward slant to the quilt pattern. For those of
you not familiar with how they get this piece of wood, both sides are
cut from a single slab of maple, right down the middle. It's called book
matching. You see the right is essentially a mirror image of the left
side. That's because it is the left side, opened like two pages of a book.

This is a shot of the quilted maple top, with a wash of alcohol to
show the grain. You can see the outline penciled onto the wood and reference
holes. These holes are lined up with the holes on the body. Later when
the neck pocket, pickup and control cavities are routed, these holes
help line up everything with a template so that every guitar is the
same every time.
